radiology MRI IV Contrast

What does it mean when a contrast agent is needed?

In certain cases, the radiologist may order some images after an enhancement (contrast) agent has been administered. This contrast material is a fluid, which is injected into a vein (usually in your arm). This contrast is NOT the same as that used in radiology or the CT departments. This contrast agent assists in some circumstances at making some certain details on the images clearer. If contrast is needed in your study, this does not mean your condition is serious or anything is wrong. It simply means additional information is needed to provide a more complete answer for your physician.

Before having this contrast and MRI procedure, tell your doctor, or the technologist performing the exam whether you are affected by any of the following:

  • Are allergic to any medicine, either prescription or nonprescription (OTC)
  • Are pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have any other medical problems, especially allergies or asthma (history of), anemia or kidney disease
