Douglas Dohl, M.D.
I was born and raised in Lansing, Illinois before moving to Dyer, Indiana while in middle school. After graduating from Lake Central High School, I attended Indiana University Bloomington, where I earned a B.S. in Biology with a minor in chemistry. I remained in Bloomington for my first two years of medical school, after which I completed the final two years at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis and graduated from IUSM in 2007. I chose the Transitional Year Residency program at Ball Memorial Hospital for its reputation of providing a great education in the setting of a friendly environment and relaxed atmosphere. I heard many positive things from residents who had trained in the program, all of which were confirmed by my experience as a fourth year medical student rotating at Ball for a month, which allowed me to see first hand how happy the residents really were to be here. I am married and live on the Northeast side of Indianapolis, which is a very easy, manageable daily drive to and from Muncie. Following completion of my year here at Ball Memorial Hospital I will return to Indianapolis for training in the Indiana University Anesthesiology Residency program.

Brian Egan, M.D.
I was born and raised on the Southside of Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduating from Roncali High School, I went to Hanover College and received my degree in Chemistry. From there, I returned to Indianapolis where I completed all four years at Indiana University School of Medicine. During my fourth year, I took an elective in the ICU at Ball Memorial Hospital. Over the month, I met many great people and felt like I just fit in here. The Transitional Year program also came highly recommended from numerous residents and attendings which had completed the program. After finishing this year, I will be moving out west to complete an anesthesiology residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Outside the hospital, I like to read, run, workout, and follow my favorite teams; Cubs, Colts, IU basketball, and ND Football. I also hope to continue another passion during this year; international medical mission work. I have been to Jamaica, Ecuador, and Kenya, and I am looking forward to visiting other countries soon.

Karl Grimmer, M.D.
I was born and raised in Griffith, Indiana in the heart of “da Region”. After graduating from high school, I attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. While there, I was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and a member of the varsity swimming team. Upon graduating from college, I attended Indiana University School of Medicine. My first two years of medical school were completed under the problem-based curriculum at the NW Center in Gary, Indiana. Indianapolis has been my home for the last two years. After completion of my internship, I will be moving back to Indianapolis to complete my training in Anesthesiology at Indiana University. When I am not working, I enjoy cooking, watching movies, and traveling all over the world. I chose Ball Memorial Hospital for my internship because of the ability to work and learn in an environment noted for excellent teaching and interesting patients. Life here at BMH allows you to work and learn in this friendly environment while still being able to enjoy the other things in life. Few other internship programs can say that their interns take care of challenging cases, while still having time to go to the gym or have dinner with their friends.

Nicole Horn, M.D.
It was a Chinese restaurant that first introduced me to Ball Memorial Hospital. Well, actually it was the “stick” from the chicken on a stick, lodged in my throat that brought me to Ball Memorial Hospital. As a scared college freshman sitting in an unfamiliar ER, never would I have fathomed doing a transitional residency at the same hospital. But here I am! Residency marks my seventh year in Muncie. Did I plan on spending three extra years here after graduating from Ball State University? No way. But I have grown to love America’s Home Town. Once getting accepted to medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine, I did my preclinical years at the Muncie Center for Medical Education. I moved down to Indianapolis for years 3 and 4 but found myself missing the quaint city of Muncie and its medical professionals. As a fourth year student, I rotated through the ICU and had my sites set on completing my transitional year at BMH. It was the close knit group, friendly staff, and the program’s willingness to teach that made my time so memorable. When I researched the program, I found it to be extremely flexible and provide wonderful training. I am confident that when I begin my anesthesia residency at Indiana University, I will be a well trained and skilled physician!

Outside of the hospital, I live a pretty normal life. My pure bred mutt - no I am not referring to my husband – but to my dog Fitzgerald, my wonderful husband Tommy and I currently live in Muncie. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, skiing, cooking, working out, playing tennis, and catching an invigorating episode of the Deadliest Catch or Man vs. Wild.

Matthew Kinzie, M.D.
I was born and raised in Modesto, California. I am the second of four brothers and the only one in my family not working in the wine industry. I moved to Ohio for college and received a B.S. in Biological Science from Wright State University. After college, I worked for several years in a local hospital operating room. I was an orthopedic implant and instrument coordinator and that position sparked my interest in becoming a physician. I attended Wright State School of Medicine and decided during that time to pursue a career in radiology. While on an away rotation at Indiana University, I heard nothing but positive comments about the Ball Transitional Year program and I knew I had to check it out. I had a great interview day and I really felt like it was a great fit for me. I had been told by past residents that I would be hard pressed to find a TY program as great as Ball and I have definitely found that to be true. My wife and daughter love the area as well and we know we made the right decision to come to Muncie. Next year, I will head back to Ohio for radiology residency at Ohio State University. I enjoy spending my spare time with my family and traveling back to California. My other hobbies include water sports and snow skiing.

Mark Nielson, M.D.
I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and have two siblings. I am married, have two children and a wonderful wife. Medicine is a second career for me. I owned and operated a carpet cleaning business prior to going back to school. I completed my undergraduate degree at IUPUI with a B.A. in biology, and obtained my medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. I spent the first two years of medical school at the Muncie Center where I became familiar with Ball Hospital. Once I decided on a career in anesthesia, I knew I wanted to go back to Ball Memorial for my transitional year. I spent a month in the ICU during my senior year. It was great. Everyone was very pleasant. The staff was approachable and the residents were willing to teach. It was an environment in which I felt I could thrive. The clincher for me was that the residents were HAPPY!! Following my year at Ball Memorial, I will complete my residency at IUSOM in Anesthesia. I have an interest in Pain Management and am planning on completing a fellowship. I enjoy golf, racquetball, and time with my family.
