We pay residents' expenses when they present presentations or posters. This is in addition to reimbursed meetings outlined in the resident benefits.

Our residents are very active in organizations such as the American College of Physicians. Dr. Romero, one of our Chief Residents last year, was the chair of the ACP Associates' Indiana Chapter Council last year. Residents also serve on multiple hospital committees.

Most faculty offices are located on campus or within a short drive from the hospital. Off-site rotations at accredited institutions may be approved based on the needs of the individual residents. We offer 25 paid vacation days, plus time off for meetings, taking required examinations, and interviewing for fellowships. In-house moonlighting opportunities are available.

New areas added to our curriculum include Evidence-Based Medicine, Practice Management, Women's Health, Sports/Occupational Medicine, End of Life Care, and the Core Competency lecture series. The latter is a group of multidisciplinary lectures teaching the following: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Communication and Interpersonal Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-Based Practice. A Practice Management conference jointly developed with the Family Medicine program adds skills in the business aspects of medicine.

Ball Hospital has a full-time Hospitalist Service which provides consultations for general medicine patients of private physicians. Rotations have been added to the curriculum to augment the resident's skills in providing medical consultation services.

The computerized medical record system is fully available in the Internal Medicine Clinic, the medical library, resident office area, and hospital floors.  Remote access from off-site is also available.  Full Internet access is available in most areas, and online search programs are provided free of charge.

Our fellowship placement is excellent. Our graduates have chosen fellowships in institutions including Indiana University, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio State University, Duke University, University of Cincinnati, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Kentucky, among others.

The benefit package includes a $4,000 flexible spending account to help offset the expenses of textbooks, meetings, moving expenses, and housing. Meals (valued at approximately $275 per month) are provided free of charge in the hospital cafeteria. The flexible spending account may also be used for graduate courses at Ball State University if desired.  Incoming residents also receive an $8,500 sign on.
