What Specific Surgical Options are Offered ?
Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y (GBP) is the most commonly performed weight-loss surgery in the United States and is considered the gold standard. GBP involves stapling the stomach to form a small pouch. A portion of the small intestine is rerouted to join the small stomach pouch.
This procedure can be performed through traditional surgery with a large incision, or through the laparoscopic method on appropriate patients. The result of the surgery is incomplete digestion of the calories and nutrients you eat. In addition, there are restrictions on the amount of food you are able to eat. This is why lifelong vitamin and mineral supplementation is required.
