Canan Named BMH Foundation President
Dec 8th, 2007
MUNCIE—Though he opted not to seek re-election, Muncie Mayor Dan Canan will continue to serve the community when his term ends at the end of the month.
Ball Memorial Hospital and Cardinal Health System announced today Canan has been named President of The BMH Foundation.
“I have lived and worked in this community my entire life,” Canan said. “I care about the people who live here and was looking for a way to continue serving them in some capacity once my term ended. When I was offered this special opportunity to be a part of one of this region’s most important community assets, I couldn’t refuse. Cardinal Health System, and more specifically Ball Memorial Hospital, are essential parts of East Central Indiana --- and the people who live and work here.”
Canan will assume his new duties Jan. 2, a day after his term as mayor ends. Kelly Stanley, who served as President of the Foundation since September 2003 was in August named President and CEO of Cardinal Health System, BMH’s parent organization.
The BMH Foundation, a 501(c)(3) supporting organization, uses donor’s contributions to support Ball Memorial Hospital’s continuing efforts to support the medical community, educate new healthcare professionals and address health problems facing area residents. It has provided funding and leadership for a variety of projects including mammograms for at-risk patients, defibrillators for area fire departments and most recently a community health needs assessment. The Foundation has also helped raise money for high-profile hospital projects like the expanded Perinatal Center, Emergency Department, Pediatric Rehabilitation and the Cancer Center at Ball Memorial Hospital. Cardinal Access – a collaborative effort to address needs of the uninsured, resulted from an initiative of the BMH Foundation.
Canan’s role as Foundation President will not be restricted to fundraising. CHS intends to draw upon his experience in governmental and community relations, communications and consensus building. CHS has been a very active part of East Central Indiana’s economic development efforts and Dan Canan will be a great addition to those on-going efforts, said Kelly Stanley.
“We’re very fortunate to be able to add to the team a proven community leader who has a long-established interest in the people who live in the communities we serve, including Muncie and Delaware County,” Kelly Stanley said. “Dan will be a very important resource as we continue to strengthen our interactions with the community, especially with regard to healthcare-related initiatives and economic development. Cardinal Health System is committed to supporting the entire medical community, including doctors, nurses, technicians and other important support staff. The Foundation continues to play an essential role in that effort.”
“In an era of declining healthcare reimbursement and a local economy in transition, it has become more challenging to meet the community’s healthcare needs,” said Jack Buckles, the Foundation’s Board Chairman. “Because of these challenges, the Foundation has had to play an increased role in helping to insure the hospital has the funding to address those needs. Dan, working along with Foundation Executive Director Tricia Stanley and the rest of the Foundation staff will serve the medical community well as the Foundation becomes an even more important part of CHS and BMH.”
Canan, a lifelong Muncie resident and Muncie Central High and Ball State University graduate is the city’s longest serving mayor- (1996-2007). He announced in December 2006 that he would not seek a fourth term.
Highlights of his 12-year tenure as mayor include:
- Reduce the city’s debt by more than $7 million
- Spearheaded the Mayor’s Downtown Redevelopment Partnership, which resulted in the revitalization of Muncie’s Downtown, generating more than $15 million in private investments
- Secured federal funds for downtown reconstruction and to purchase dilapidated housing in the downtown district. The latter funds were used to build 12 units of transitional housing and 30 houses for seniors.
- Muncie was named Community of the Year in 2004 by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and received the 2006 Community Achievement Award from the Indiana Cities and Towns Association.
Canan’s goal is to not only raise funds for The BMH Foundation, but to raise awareness of Ball Memorial Hospital in the communities it serves and to spotlight the health system’s importance as an economic force in the region.
“This is an excellent organization that exists for the benefit of the entire medical community and the region at large,” he said. “Part of my role is to help expand everyone’s knowledge of all the good Cardinal Health System and Ball Memorial Hospital accomplishes.”
